Why Opportunity Class

Opportunity classes (OC) are specially designed accelerated classes in NSW primary schools that cater for academically gifted students in Year 5 and 6. Students who are accepted into these classes are grouped with like-minded high achieving students, where they receive specialised teaching and an appropriately challenging learning environment.

Students who are able to obtain an OC placement can usually get an advantage in getting into a selective school in Year 7 and be able to excel in the HSC in the future. The content covered in OC classes is covered faster and in greater depth, and students are challenged to learn with a cohort of a similar level.

However, it is not a guarantee and conversely, not getting into an O.C. class doesn’t mean a student will be unsuccessful in getting into a selective school. A students’ ability and performance can improve over the time and with dedication and the right guidance and experience in test conditions, students can still get into a competitive school

The O.C. Test

The OC test format has been changed since 2021.

There are three components of the test, and they are weighted equally: Reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking skills.

The Opportunity Class Placement Score or (Placement Profile Score called in the past) is a mark out of 120 (previously 300). The mark is calculated based on weighted scaled test score out of 100 (previously 200) and moderated school assessment score out of 20 (previously 100).

Chances to Get In

About 1 out of 7 students sitting the test can get an offer.

In 2021, about 12,000 students in NSW sat the test, and only 1,840 placements were successful. This means there is only a 15% success rate. This is almost half the success rate of a selective school placement which is approximately 27.5%.

There is no fixed minimum entry score. Each school has their own set entry score. They are ranged from 160 to the highest of 250

In 2021 minimum entry of Beecroft Public School is 250. Entry score o West Goulburn Public School is 160.

Preparation for the Test

The relative weighting of the school assessment scores has changed. Schools provide school assessment scores for English and Mathematics based generally on the student’s performance on the school’s curriculum in Year 4 and up to the end of Year 5.
